Hope you enjoy these views of the ever changing sky and sea in Friendship, Maine.
As well as being known for it’s working waterfront with a large and active lobster fishing fleet, our village is famous for the Friendship Sloop, a beautiful and distinctive sailboat that originated about 1880 in Friendship, Maine. Also known as Muscongus Bay sloop or lobster sloop, it is a style of gaff-rigged sloop whose design originated with the fishermen in Friendship and the neighboring town of Bremen. It was the traditional fishing boat used off the coast of Maine, especially for lobstering, until the introduction of the gasoline engine early in the 20th century.
Even today, modern reproductions, both wooden and fiberglass, remain popular among enthusiasts and there is an active Friendship Sloop Society.
